Pulley systems are used in the real world to lift large masses onto tall heights. You might have seen the workers repairing the roof of a house and using the pulley system to lift their tools or materials to the roof. A pulley is an example of a simple machine.

A pulley is a wheel with a groove along its edge, also called a sheave, for holding a rope or cable. Pulleys are usually used to change the direction of an applied force or in sets designed to reduce the amount of force needed to lift a load.

However, the same amount of work is necessary for the load to reach the same height as would be without the pulleys. The magnitude of the force is reduced, but it must act through a longer distance. The effort needed to pull a load up is roughly the weight of the load divided by the number of wheels. The more wheels there are, the less efficient a system is, because of more friction between the rope and the wheels. Pulleys are often included in the list of simple machines.

In the mechanics of pulleys, a wheel that carries a flexible rope, cord, cable, chain, or belt on its rim. Pulleys are used singly or in combination to transmit energy and motion. In belt drives, pulleys are attached to shafts at their axes, and power is transmitted between the shafts by means of endless belts running over the pulleys. One or more independently rotating pulleys can be used to gain mechanical advantage, especially for lifting weights. The shafts around which the pulleys turn may attach them to frames or blocks, and a combination of pulleys, blocks, and rope is called a block and tackle.

Pulleys are widely used in numerous material handling processes and are ideal hoisting equipment. The pulley system is used to lift large masses onto different heights. The pulley system consists of one or more pulleys and a rope and a cable. The number of pulleys used can be increase or decrease the mechanical advantage of the system. Most often, the higher the mechanical advantages the easier it is to lift the object that is being lifted. They are designed for different weights for different applications. They are available in different types such as round belt, flat belt, v-belt pulleys, idler pulleys, belt pulleys etc. As per requirement. V-belt and flat belt pulleys are used in transmission and power transmission systems.

The various types of pulleys include fixed pulleys, which have a fixed axle. A fixed pulley is used to redirect the force in a rope; movable pulleys, which have a free axle. A movable pulley is used to transform forces; and the third type is compound pulley, which is a combination fixed and movable pulley system.
